Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming the Carleton University Ravens Basketball team! Thank you very much to coach Dave Smart and the players for coming again this year! What a fabulous time we all had.
The kids were divided into 2 teams and had a race through an obstacle course - jumping through the ladder on the ground, then through the hula hoops, then kick a soccer ball and try to score on a Carleton player.
Then the 2 teams had a chance to play soccer or dribble and pass the basketballs to teammates. The last activity was Octopus where the children tried to run across the field and avoid being tagged by the players. If they were tagged, they became seaweed, until everyone was tagged. Although it was very hot, the children enjoyed running. We were so glad it did not rain after all!
The children received Carleton Basketball t-shirts as well! Thank you!
Have a look at our fun afternoon!

This morning we had the pleasure of welcoming Grandpa Brian and Grandma Cat to our classroom! Grandpa Brian, who works for Lee Valley, brought in some hammers. He provided all the wood pieces and nails for the children. The boys and girls did such a fantastic job hammering their nails straight! No fingers got hammered! :-)
Grandpa Brian had made small holes to indicate where the nails would go. Each design was a different shape. To finish, the children wrapped a piece of yarn around the nails so you could easily see the geometric shape.
This afternoon, we also had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Dave Smart with his basketball team, the Carleton University Ravens. The players had different stations set up for the children. The kids had a wonderful time! We will have photos of the basketball team tomorrow.
Thank you very much Grandpa Brian, Grandma Cat, Mr. Smart and the Ravens basketball players!

This morning before school started, some EDP children found a baby bird in our kindergarten garden. We believe he fell out of his nest as he looked very young! Only a few feathers on him.
Since last week, we have noticed some cardinals flying around our tree in our yard. We think it could be a cardinal baby bird.
Since it was early, Mme Gallant was able to bring him to the Ottawa Wild Bird Sanctuary. Before she left, the Wild Bird Sanctuary gave her an ID number so she could call and check up on our baby bird.
We'll keep you updated!

We had the pleasure of welcoming Métis Senator Lois McCallum to our school this morning. She spoke to the children about Métis ways of life. She brought in photos and a sash to show the children. She explained the tradition of the sash and why people wore them. She also explained that to receive a sash, you have to do good deeds for others. She demonstrated, with a little volunteer, how to wear the sash.
We presented her with a homemade card made by the children and also offered her beautiful flowers. She was very touched by these gifts.
Thank you to Mlle Hughes for organizing her visit!

What a beautiful day! We stayed outdoors a little longer this morning and did plenty of learning and exploring!
From taking care of our garden, doing science experiments; "What will float and what will sink?" We also had children problem solving with the marble run. They figured out how to angle the tubes so the ball would keep on rolling.
With the wind storm, we had plenty of pine cones on the ground and what a better way to make use of them than creating beautiful designs!
We had children playing soccer to doing Jumping Jacks! They were active and busy for sure!
May 3, 2018
As we continue to learn about habitats, Mme Pat brought in some photos she took during a walk with her family. She took photos of a porcupine she saw up in a tree. She also brought in branches she found on the ground that were cut by the porcupine.
The children passed the branches around and had a closer look at them. We asked them who they thought had cut them down. The children were unsure but very surprised when they saw the photos of the porcupine, "porc-épic"!
Have a look at the great photos of the porcupine!

This morning we talked about what they knew about "Outdoor classrooms". What does it look like? What can we find in an outdoor classroom? We had a look at many examples of them. The children noticed that they don't all look the same and we can also find different materials. Some have a roof to protect you from the element and others have tables, while some have tree stumps for seats.
SJA will be getting an outdoor classroom so we want the children to have an input in the layout and the location of this new "classroom".
We brought the children outside to have a look to where we could build it. With a partner, they used their clipboard to draw a plan of an outdoor classroom they would like to have at SJA. They did a fantastic job in drawing the layout and adding details to their plan!

Here are a few random pictures from this week so far...
We have a little friend who create a large drawing for all the friends to find "What's the same?" and "What's different?" We had an interesting conversation around the similarities and the differences they found on each side of the drawing.
This is from yesterday's from Carleton University. The children watched a short video and made a craft following the video. The students from Carleton University were very appreciative of the children"s participation in the study. Only those who brought in their consent forms got to be interviewed by the university students.
This is from this morning. Each morning and after rest time, the children get to look at books and explore print. They love to share when they find letters, words or sounds they can read!
April 18, 2018
We have been talking about things that are "vivant" and "non-vivant" (living and non-living things). We've discussed what makes each one unique and found many examples for each. The children got to sort pictures and we've watched a video explaining the differences between the two.
Yesterday, we began talking about habitats and learning about different habitats we can find and what kind of animals we can find in them. Here are some photos of the children exploring animals and their habitats, from painting different habitats, building them and learning about them in books.
April 12, 2018
Here are 2 fun little songs that the children enjoy singing. You can ask your child to sing them for you.
April 11, 2018
Yesterday the children were introduced to water beads. We put the small beads in one of the sensory bins. We added water and watched them slowly grow. The boys and girls were very intrigued and interested in watching the changing beads!
This morning we saw that were bigger than the previous day. The children really enjoy playing with them. Have a look at all the colourful beads!
April 10, 2018
Yesterday we began talking about things that are "vivant" and "non-vivant" (living and non-living things). The boys and girls began naming many different things that are alive like birds, fish, dogs, cows, flowers, trees, etc...
We discussed what makes these living things special and what they need to stay alive.
One child said, "They need to eat."
Another one said, "They have to drink water to stay alive!"
I then asked them, "What is around us that we don't see but is very important for us to have?"
One little boy answered, "Your lungs!" Another one said, "Yes, you breathe the air."
We talked about how living things can grow and also looked around our class for all the non-living things we could find around us.
Today we talked about what plants need to grow and how we can take care of them. A little friend in our class brought in yesterday some seeds with their little containers for us to plant. It was perfect timing for us to plant them today!
Have a look!

We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter with family and friends!
This morning, while we were looking at a picture of an "oiseau" (bird), a child said, "That's a girl bird." I then asked them, "How can you tell if it's a girl or a boy bird?" One child answered, The boy and girl don't always look the same. Another child said, "Like the boy duck has a green head and the mommy doesn't."
We then looked on the SMARTboard for pictures of ducks. The children found them very cute! They noticed the difference right away.
During centres, a few children decided to draw some ducks. They asked if they could use the iPad to look at some pictures while they drew them. They made all sorts of duck pictures; ducklings, mommy and daddy ducks and one child said, "I made teenagers!" When asked what is different with teenager ducks, he said they're a little bit bigger than the babies but not as big as the mommy and daddy.
The children decided to put all of their drawings together to make a book. Tomorrow they will be writing words to their drawings. Can't wait to see their stories!

We have been learning about different modes of transportation in French and what we say depending on how we are travelling.
For example, if we are travelling by plane, we would say, "Je pars en avion." By bicycle, "Je pars en bicyclette."
Many boys and girls have been using these expressions, "Je pars en ..." with other objects. One morning, a friend drew the sea with a turtle. Another little friend said, "Madame! Je pars en tortue!"
A few children were interested in writing on a whiteboard some of these expressions we have been learning in class. Here are a few pictures of them!
March 26, 2018
We had the pleasure of welcoming a parent-artist in our class today! She introduced a painting by Van Gogh, Starry Night. The children did a marvelous job with their recreation! Thank you very much to our parent volunteer!

A busy morning working and playing at different centres!
The boys and girls are great at recognizing shapes around them and they can also easily sort pictures to group them with a corresponding shape. We love working with shapes!
Counting is always fun but especially when you have small transportation vehicles to help you count!
This is an activity where they need to pay close attention to the pictures and correctly count each drawing on the card. If they are all placed correctly, the picture on the back should be the same on both cards.
The boys and girls are great at working together!
The boys and girls are great at working together!
The children love role playing. We had a doctor's kit out for them. The boys and girls took an area in the class and made it out be the children's hospital, CHEO. They were very caring to their patients and made sure they felt better before discharging them from the hospital. Since we have been talking about the many different occupations, the children found themselves jobs like a doctor, a surgeon, a nurse,,,

This week we will be talking about non-standard measurement. The boys and girls are learning that we can find ways to measure things without having a ruler or a measuring tape. We will be practising this skill with cubes and other objects we have in our classroom. We will also do some fun interactive activities on the SMARTboard. Have a look at our friends and see how many snowflake tall they are!
This month we have been learning about different emotions we can have and how we can express them in French. We have been learning "Je suis content" (I am happy), "Je suis triste" (I am sad), "Je suis fatigué" (I am tired), "Je suis malade" (I am sick), "Je suis fâché" (I am mad), "Je suis surpris" (I am surprise). We've had many fun games of charade with these expressions!
We are continuing to talk about the different community helpers we can find in our community. We made many little puppets that we can use in our dramatic play area.

This morning, we talked about "Les couleurs primaires" (primary colours). They were asked which colours were primary colours and why they thought they were primary colours. A few children answered and said, "rouge, bleu and jaune." (red, blue and yellow) We learned that primary colours are colours that we cannot get from mixing any other colour together.
I asked them what colours will you get if you mix them together. Two students answered, "You will get secondary colours." We decided to try an experiment with coloured water and paper towel. We waited for a while to see what was going to happen. We saw the middle cup fill with the combined water from the 2 primary colour cups. Have a look and see what colours we got!
At the art table, the children had the 3 primary colours available and created beautiful artwork with them!
Tomorrow, we will experiment with the yellow and blue and see what we will get when we mix them together.
Here is a link to a song about the primary colours.

Yesterday we began a discussion about pumpkins and wondered about a few things like, Where do they come from? How do we get pumpkins? How come some are different colours? What it is inside of them? How much do they weigh? How big do they get?
When we were wondering about the pumkins, a few students shared their thoughts. Here are a few of their thoughts.
Where do pumpkins come from?
"They come from the pumpkin patch."
"First they grow in the pumpkin patch."
"They need water and a seed."
Are all the pumpkins the same?
"Some of them are white."
What can you do with a pumpkin?
"You can eat it."
"You can make pumpkin pie."
"or pumpkin cake."
"You can carve it or draw a face."
A pumpkin was brought in for them to see. We talked about how heavy they thought the pumpkin was. The children were asked if they thought the pumpkin was lighter or heavier than our friends in the class. We had a scale but first we estimated the weight of a little friend. Some said 10 pounds, some said 40 pounds. We weighed him and he was 36 pounds. We then asked the children if the pumpkin weighed less or more than our friend. Most of them estimated that the pumpkin would weigh less. One said 20 pounds. Another said 10 ponds. We weighed the pumpkin and found out that it weighed 8 pounds!
We also measured the pumpkin to see how tall it was. It was 25 centimetres!
This morning we decided to cut open the pumpkin to see what was inside.
We wondered what would we find and if we put our hand in, how would it feel. Here are some of what the boys and girls said.
"I think there is a seed in there."
Teacher: One or more than one?
"I think there are 20 seeds."
"I think it will feel gooey."
"I think it will feel slimy."
"I think it's orange inside."
Here are a few photos from our investigation!

This morning we had a wonderful time celebrating "Outdoor Classroom Day!" The children were busy learning and exploring during our time outside. We had many activities that were of interest for the children.
With many colourful leaves gathered in a bag, some children made a graph to see how many leaves we had for each colour.
With twigs and small branches, some of the boys and girls created a Tic Tac Toe frame and played a few rounds of this fun game.
We also had a few "citrouilles" pumpkins and squashes on display that brought many children wanting to create a variety of artworks.
Quite a few children were also interested in working in the garden. They helped clean and dig out old plants. We definitely have future gardeners!
Have a look at our busy morning!
Some of our beautiful artworks!

Today we baked apple muffins - des muffins aux pommes! The children chopped the apples, measured the flour, sugar and other ingredients, cracked eggs, mixed and stirred, and filled the muffin cups. They were delicious!

This morning we went for our Terry Fox Walk. The weather was beautiful!
Earlier in the week, we had talked about who was Terry Fox. We learned about his life and the yearly walk that we do in his honour.
After when we came back in from our walk, a few friends noticed that our slug had moved up in the aquarium! It is huge! A big Thank You to our friend Bennett for bringing it in for us to observe. The boys and girls had a closer look with magnifying glasses. They also got the chance to feed it. Hope he likes his meals!

This morning, Bennett's mom came by to drop off some wonderful nature items for us to explore! During our whole group time, we discussed about what each item could be.
Here are some of the children's observation.
Mme Gallant: "What do you think this is?"
Miley: "It's a nest."
Vincent: "I see something round in the box. Round like a circle."
Mme Gallant: "How do you know it's a nest?"
Ethan: "Because it has a lot of grass."
Noah: "They use sticks."
Luc: "They put it on a tree."
Mme Gallant: "Why do you think they put their nest in a tree?"
Dammy: "Something could eat it (bird, egg).
Lucas: "The babies are in the eggs."
Gabriel: "The mom and dad could be away and something could eat the eggs."
We looked at how the nest could have been hanging and we also discussed about the different tree trunks that were brought in.
During centres, the children had the chance to have a closer look at all of the items. We got some magnifying glasses so they could have an even closer look. They noticed the small pieces of egg shells that were still in the nest.

This morning we made a yummy fruit salad! "Une salade de fruits!" Before we began our fruit salads, we listed many fruits that could be used and we tallied how many of those fruits we had today. We had a good variety! Thank you to all the parents who sent in a fruit to share with the whole class. A special Thank You goes out to our two parent volunteers who came to help with our little friends in cutting and mixing all our fruits together! The boys and girls really enjoyed eating all the different fruits.

Yesterday, we introduced "Détective de mots" (word detective). The children go on a word hunt for the pictures they have on their clipboard. They have been great at locating the words in the room and writing the letters for each of them.
Here are some of our friends searching for our words!
Our friend Bennett brought many nature items for us to look at and some friends were very interested in creating artwork from observing these beautiful plants. We have great little artists in our class! "Merci" Bennett for bringing them in!
Here are some friends working on making letters. Using yarn and letters written on sandpaper, the boys and girls are able to recreate the letters and notice what makes each letter special. "It has a straight line, it has a circle, it looks like a tent."
Enjoying a variety of materials to create artwork or to problem solve!
